In today’s competitive digital landscape, effective communications are crucial for nonprofits striving to make a meaningful impact. Understanding and reaching the right audience can often be a daunting task, but our new tool aims to simplify this process. We are thrilled to introduce our latest AI-powered innovation, designed to help nonprofits create marketing personas.

What are personas?

Personas are fictional characters that represent segments of your target audience, providing a granular and detailed representation of the individuals within these groups. For instance, consider an animal shelter's target audience: families with young children who enjoy spending time with animals. A persona for this group might be a 32-year-old man named John, who has one child, lives in the suburbs with his wife and child, and is interested in adopting a puppy. You can add even more detail, such as hobbies, likes, dislikes, and motivations, which helps tailor your messaging to resonate with this specific type of person.

Why are personas essential for nonprofits?

Personas are crucial for a nonprofit's digital strategy. They guide the direction of digital content, ensuring that each social media post, email, blog, or campaign targets a specific audience with a clear, measurable goal in mind.

Through our BRIDGE programme (Building Resilience in Digital Growth and Engagement), we explore digital storytelling and campaigns, both of which require a detailed understanding of who it is you are talking to online, and how you should communicate with them. Participants are encouraged to develop their own audience personas to steer their digital communications. Traditionally, this process has been carried out offline using worksheets or through collaborative Zoom calls. While an essential process, we recognise that persona development can be time-consuming.

Introducing Lightful’s Persona Creator

To support our nonprofit community in creating personas more efficiently, we've developed the Persona Creator. This tool makes it easy and enjoyable to build detailed personas in just a few minutes - powered by Lumi, our suite of AI-enhanced tools.

How does it work?

  1. Imagine your persona: Think about your audience groups, their locations, and their reasons for engagement.
  2. Create your persona: Design a unique persona using our Persona Creation Wizard.
  3. Review with AI assistance: Once you've created your persona, you can fill out the details and send the information to OpenAI. Our crafted prompt helps the AI provide feedback, which is then displayed on the page. Each time you edit and refine your persona, you can get additional AI feedback to further enhance it.
  4. Put your persona to work: Once finalised, use your persona to inform and refine your digital strategies.

How will this tool help?

By having a dynamic persona that you can edit and build upon, you'll gain a deeper understanding of why your target audience would or wouldn't engage with your content. This insight will make it easier to craft communications that truly resonate and drive action.

At Lightful, we are committed to empowering nonprofits with the tools - particularly those using the power of generative AI - they need to succeed in the digital age. Our Persona Creator is designed to simplify the process of persona development, enabling organisations to connect with their audience on a deeper level and achieve greater engagement online... leading to enhanced impact offline too.

Ready to enhance your digital strategy with tailored personas? Try our Persona Creator today and experience the difference it can make for your nonprofit's outreach and engagement efforts.

Building resilience in Bolton: the impact of digital skills on local charities and communities

Bolton is a vibrant town, with strong communities and a well-loved football club whose charity, Bolton Wanderers in the Community, has been supporting residents of Bolton for over 30 years. Communities in Bolton, however, face multiple challenges, including high levels of social deprivation. There are 1,672 Voluntary, Charity and Social Enterprises (VCSEs) in the area who exist to support the people of Bolton, but they themselves, in the years following a pandemic that drove interaction online, can find it difficult to find and connect to those who need them. Bolton CVS, an infrastructure organisation dedicated to supporting charities in Bolton, identified a critical need to support them with digital capacity building so that these communities could reconnect, and Bolton's VCSEs could reach the people they were founded to serve.

Charity Digital Skills Report 2024 - Lightful's Response

Every year, we wait with baited (and sometimes apprehensive) breath for the annual Charity Digital Skills Report to be released. It’s become something of a key marker of the UK charity sector’s state of digital maturity, and forms a key part of how we at Lightful measure the need for our digital training programmes. Having quickly read the (119 page!) report, here are my *hot takes* and thoughts on solutions:
